What websites really cost in 2026, in one page: cost bands for 7 project types, price multipliers for 6 geographic markets, and build-cost deltas for 5 platforms. Every number is computed from the engine config behind our calculator, calibrated against 600+ project quotes and public rate benchmarks — and the full dataset is free to reuse under CC BY 4.0.

Report summary

A website costs between $300 and $50,000+ in 2026. Identical scope swings 4.1× by region (0.35× South/SE Asia to 1.45× US), 2.4–2.7× by provider type (median online store: $2,900 freelancer vs $7,000 agency), and up to 2.9× by platform (Shopify 0.85× vs custom code 2.5×). Key findings

Eight numbers that describe the 2026 website market. Each one stands on its own, and each one shows its arithmetic — quote them with a link to this page.

  1. 01

A website costs between $300 and $50,000+ in 2026 — from a basic freelancer-built landing page to an agency-built custom web app.

Range endpoints: engine base price for a landing page ($300) and the top of the published custom web app band ($50,000+).

  2. 02

Where you hire moves the price 4.1× on identical scope: the same project runs at a 0.35× multiplier in South/SE Asia and 1.45× in the United States.

1.45 ÷ 0.35 = 4.1. All six regional multipliers are published in the dataset.

  3. 03

Hourly rates in 2026: $15–$45 in South/SE Asia, $25–$50 in Eastern Europe, $60–$100 in Western Europe, £55–£90 in the UK, A$90–A$150 in Australia, $80–$150 in the US.

The six hourly bands as published in the dataset, one per geographic market.

  4. 04

Eastern Europe is the value outlier: at 0.55×, an Eastern European team prices the same project 45% below Western Europe (1.00×) and 62% below the US (1.45×).

    1 − 0.55/1.00 = 45%; 1 − 0.55/1.45 = 62%.

  5. 05

Agencies land at 2.4–2.7× freelancer prices across all seven project types — the median online store is $2,900 freelancer-built vs $7,000 agency-built.

Agency median ÷ freelancer median per project type: lowest ratio 2.4× (blog, ecommerce), highest 2.7× (marketplace). Engine mechanics: a 2.2× agency tier multiplier plus a 1.5× service markup.

  6. 06

Platform choice swings the build price up to 2.9×: Shopify carries a 0.85× multiplier, custom code 2.5×, on the same scope.

    2.5 ÷ 0.85 = 2.9. WordPress is the 1.00× baseline; Magento sits at 2.0×.

  7. 07

Keeping a Magento store online costs more than 3× a Shopify store: $320–$450/month vs $95–$140/month before any marketing spend.

Monthly totals (hosting + platform fee + basic maintenance) as published in the Cost Index: 320/95 = 3.4, 450/140 = 3.2.

  8. 08

A rush deadline adds 65% to the price; a relaxed timeline trims 5%.

Urgency multipliers in the dataset: rush 1.65×, normal 1.00×, relaxed 0.95×.

Cost bands by project type

Engine medians at the 1.00× Western Europe baseline, before regional and platform multipliers. The agency column runs a consistent 2.4–2.7× above the freelancer column — that ratio, not the absolute number, is the stable fact across every project type.

Project typeFreelancer medianAgency medianAgency ÷ freelancerBase timeline
Landing page$475$1,2002.5×1 week
Portfolio site$650$1,6002.5×2 weeks
Presentation / brochure site$750$1,9002.5×2 weeks
Blog / content site$950$2,2502.4×3 weeks
Ecommerce store$2,900$7,0002.4×5 weeks
Web app (MVP)$11,000$28,0002.5×8 weeks
Multi-vendor marketplace$9,000$24,0002.7×12 weeks

Medians and base timelines from the published dataset (/api/cost-data, median_project_cost_usd + base_project_types). Ratio = agency median ÷ freelancer median.

Regional economics: the 4.1× spread

Region is the single biggest lever on price. The engine applies one multiplier per market to identical scope; the last column prices the same median ecommerce store ($2,900 freelancer-built at the Western Europe baseline) in each market. Example: Eastern Europe = $2,900 × 0.55 = $1,595; the US = $2,900 × 1.45 = $4,205.

Platform deltas: 0.85× to 2.5×

The platform decides both the build price and the monthly bill. Shopify is the cheapest build (0.85×) but carries a platform fee from $39/month ($2,300/month on Shopify Plus); Magento and custom code cost 2–2.5× more to build and the most to keep running.

Methodology — and what this report is not

Every figure in this report comes from one source: the configuration of the 9-engine estimation model that powers the Project Cost Estimator calculator — base prices and medians per project type, tier multipliers (freelancer vs agency), geographic market multipliers, platform multipliers, and urgency multipliers. That config is calibrated against 600+ project quotes and public rate benchmarks, and refreshed when the underlying rates move (current data version: 2026-07-16). Where this page shows a derived number — a ratio, a spread, a localized example — the arithmetic is printed next to it.

What this report is not: it is not a survey, and we did not poll agencies or freelancers. We do not claim a tracked-invoice sample, and the calculator itself stores no estimates. If a number is not in the published dataset or derivable from it, it is not in this report. The full engine breakdown is on the methodology page; the machine-readable dataset is at /api/cost-data.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a website cost in 2026?

A website costs between $300 and $50,000+ in 2026. Engine medians per project type: landing page $475 freelancer-built / $1,200 agency-built; presentation site $750 / $1,900; ecommerce store $2,900 / $7,000; web app MVP $11,000 / $28,000. The final price then shifts with region (0.35× to 1.45×) and platform (0.85× to 2.5×).

Why do agencies charge more than freelancers?

The engine prices agency work at a 2.2× global tier multiplier plus a 1.5× service markup, which puts finished agency medians at 2.4–2.7× the freelancer figure for the same project. The gap pays for project management, design and QA roles, redundancy, and agency overhead — a freelancer quotes one salary, an agency quotes a team.

What is the cheapest region to hire web developers in 2026?

South/SE Asia (India, Philippines, Vietnam) is the cheapest at a 0.35× multiplier and $15–$45/hour. Eastern Europe (Romania, Poland, Ukraine) is the usual value pick at 0.55× and $25–$50/hour: 45% below Western European pricing with a strong senior talent pool and near-EU time zones.

Where does the data in this report come from?

Every figure is computed from the engine config behind the projectcostestimator.com calculator — base prices, medians, and multipliers calibrated against 600+ project quotes and public rate benchmarks.
