The problem we're solving

Getting a web project quoted is broken. A business owner looking to build an ecommerce store will get quotes ranging from $2,000 to $50,000 for the exact same scope. A startup founder building an MVP will hear “it depends” from every developer they talk to. An agency trying to price a client project will spend hours on a proposal that may not even be in the right ballpark.

The web development industry has a transparency problem. Pricing is opaque, inconsistent, and heavily influenced by who you ask, where they're located, and how good they are at sales — not necessarily how good they are at building software.

We built Project Cost Estimator to fix this. Not with vague “it depends” answers, but with real numbers based on real data.

Who's behind this

FF

Florin Florea

Founder & Solo Developer — Scopebit

I've been building web projects for over 10 years — ecommerce stores on Magento and Shopify, SaaS platforms, agency websites, WordPress sites, and custom web applications. I've worked with clients ranging from solo entrepreneurs to enterprise teams across Europe, the US, and Australia.

The same conversation happened on every single project: “How much will this cost?” And every single time, the answer was either a wild guess, an inflated agency quote, or an unrealistically cheap Upwork bid. Nobody had a reliable, data-driven answer.

So I built one. I took everything I learned from scoping hundreds of real projects — the hourly rates, the platform differences, the feature complexity, the geographic pricing gaps — and encoded it into a transparent calculation engine. No black box. No “contact us for pricing.” Just honest numbers you can verify.

How the estimator works

Unlike simple calculators that multiply hours by a rate, our tool runs 9 independent calculation engines in parallel. Each engine analyzes a different dimension of your project and they cross-reference each other for consistency.

Pricing Engine

24-step pipeline: base hours → features → design → platform → market → tier → contingency → clamp

Platform Engine

Weighted scoring across WordPress, Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, and custom — recommends the best fit

Complexity Engine

30+ feature analysis with synergy multipliers — features don't just add up, they compound

Risk Engine

12-factor scoring covering scope, integrations, urgency, client type, and revision risk

Timeline Engine

Realistic delivery estimates with design, development, QA, and buffer phases

ROI Projection

3-scenario analysis: conservative, moderate, optimistic — with break-even month and 12-month ROI

Monthly Cost Engine

13 ongoing line items: hosting, SSL, domain, email, CDN, security, backups, plugins, maintenance

Content Engine

Copywriting, photography, video production, and content strategy — the costs everyone forgets

Insights Engine

Smart recommendations that catch overpriced scopes, missing features, and optimization opportunities

Our data & methodology

Every estimate is calibrated against 600+ real project data points collected from agency portfolios, freelancer records, and platform-specific pricing across 6 geographic markets: Eastern Europe, Western Europe, United Kingdom, United States, Australia, and South/Southeast Asia.

Rate data is refreshed weekly from 8 independent sources: Upwork, Clutch, GoodFirms, WebFX, Tapflare, Index.dev, VOCSO, and Arc.dev. Currency exchange rates update daily via the European Central Bank API.

Our target accuracy is within ±18% of real market quotes — and we validate this by comparing our estimates against actual proposals from agencies and freelancers. When we find drift, we recalibrate.

Calibration process

  1. Collect scoped project data (hours, features, platform, market, final cost) from real portfolios
  2. Normalize rates across 6 geographic markets using purchasing power and local demand
  3. Build per-feature hour estimates with non-linear scaling (features compound, not just add up)
  4. Validate against new quotes — target ±18% accuracy on 80%+ of scenarios
  5. Run golden-scenario tests on every code change to prevent pricing drift
  6. Update rates weekly, recalibrate multipliers quarterly

What we believe

Transparency over mystery

Every calculation is visible. Hours × rate. No hidden formulas, no "contact us for a quote." If our estimate says $12,400, you can see exactly why — which features cost what, how the platform choice affects price, and what the contingency covers.

Data over opinions

Our estimates come from real project data across 6 markets, not from gut feelings or industry "best guesses." When a WordPress site costs $3,500 in our calculator, it's because that's what WordPress sites with those features actually cost in 2026.

Free first, premium later

The full calculator is free forever. No signup, no email gates, no artificial limitations. Premium features (PDF reports, expert reviews) exist for people who want deeper analysis — but the core tool is free.

Honest recommendations

When our engine recommends Shopify over Magento, it's because the data says Shopify is the better fit for your scope — not because Shopify pays us more. Our platform recommendation engine uses weighted scoring, not affiliate incentives.
