No-Code vs Custom — When to Switch
The most expensive marketplace mistake is starting custom too early. The second most expensive is staying on no-code too long.
Stay on no-code (Sharetribe Flex, Arcadier, Marketify) when:

How to Cut Marketplace Build Cost 40-60%
1. Validate with no-code first.
Sharetribe Flex ($99-$299/mo, $8K-$22K custom dev) replaces $80K-$150K of custom MVP work. Spend $15K to learn what to build before spending $120K.
2. Cut "social features" from MVP.
Activity feeds, follower systems, in-app notifications about other users' actions. Usually $15K-$40K of dev and almost zero conversion impact in marketplace MVPs.
3. Use Stripe Connect Standard, not Custom.
Standard onboarding is hosted by Stripe — $0 dev cost. Custom looks better but adds $15K-$40K. Switch only after you've proven the marketplace works.
4. Embed third-party messaging.
Stream, SendBird, or PubNub at $99-$499/mo replaces $15K-$40K of WebSocket dev. Save the time for product work.
5. Skip native apps for v1.
Responsive PWA is enough for the first 12 months. Native apps are $50K-$120K of dev that doesn't move conversion until you have repeat users.
6. Use Algolia or Meilisearch (managed), not custom Elasticsearch.

7. Build admin tools in Retool.

8. Hire one senior generalist, not an agency.
